报告人简介:
Jie Zhang has held the Chair in Wireless Systems at the Department of Electronic and Electrical Engineering, the University of Sheffield (www.sheffield.ac.uk) since Jan. 2011.
He is also the Founder, Board Director and Chief Scientific Officer of Ranplan Wireless (www.ranplanwireless.com), a public company listed on Nasdaq First North. Ranplan Wireless produces a suite of world leading indoor and the first and only joint indoor–outdoor radio network planning and optimization tools suites including Ranplan Professional® and Collaboration-Hub, which are being used by the world’s largest mobile operators and network vendors across the globe for 5G, 4G and WiFi network deployment, and 6G system R&D.
Along with his students and colleagues, he has pioneered research in small cell and heterogeneous network (HetNet) and published some of the landmark papers/book on these topics, widely used by both academia and industry. Since 2010, he and his team have also developed ground-breaking work in modelling and designing smart built environments. His Google scholar citations are in excess of 8000 with an H-index of 38.
Prior to his current appointments, he studied and/or worked at Imperial College London, Oxford University, University of Bedfordshire, and East China University of Science and Technology (PhD in 1995), reaching the rank of a Lecturer, Reader and Professor in 2002, 2005 and 2006 respectively.
His research interests are centered on perfecting wireless communications in the built environments, including indoor wireless network planning/optimization, radio propagation modelling, wireless efficient building design, metamaterial, and data-driven network optimization.

报告摘要:
In this talk, Jie will discuss how to choose a promising research direction and develop it into an emerging research field. First, he will explain the challenges he faced as he moved from process system control to wireless communications. He will then discuss why he chose indoor wireless communications and pioneered research in femtocell/small cell and heterogeneous networks. Next, he will explain why, in 2010, he created a new research direction, Building Wireless Performance (BWP) Modeling, Evaluation and Design, which has never been done before. Finally, he will explain why BWP is important in the 6G and post-6G era, and point out some interesting research that can be done building on the BWP framework he and his team have built.
